Context

Europe offers unique learning experiences, but access to these is not equal for all young people. Participation in DiscoverEU requires the necessary financial resources at the destinations, and the application process can be a barrier. The age restriction for 18-year-olds is another hurdle, especially for those with limited organisational skills due to a lack of travel experience, which can cause significant uncertainty. While DiscoverEU Inclusion is certainly a conceivable format, it does not include the planned networking with other young people and is currently limited to the same age group.

Mobility—travelling—requires positive experiences, particularly in challenging situations that build problem-solving skills and self-confidence. What might be considered normal and easily manageable by some social groups can be a significant barrier for other young people, to the point where they might prefer to opt-out. In the real everyday lives of many young people, mobility does indeed have its limits: in rural areas, due to language barriers, or due to a lack of knowledge on how to find acceptable (affordable) destinations, safe and budget-friendly accommodation, etc.

Objectives

Through the different learning formats, we want to train professionals and young people in different fields of mobile youth work to get new orientation through mobility. The two main results provide professionals with tools for a new format of mobile youth work in the context of non-formal education. Young people inlvoved in the project are strengthened and empowered and get the chance to build a cross-border network.

Activities

Zug um Zug - Train to Europe combines four local pedagogical activities (development of a simulation game) with two training sessions for professionals, a training and encounter week for young people and the development of a methodological and thematic library.

The themes of mobility and digital literacy will be intertwined with offline literacy and green literacy. The project will be concluded with national events for multiplication and dissemination.

We believe it is important that participation in the project is independent of the type of school attended and is deliberately conducted in German, so as not to limit the exchange of young people due to a lack of foreign language skills.
